WFU Supports Binding Referenda And Constitutional Amendments

Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU) President Darin Von Ruden issued the following statement in support of Governor Evers’ proposal to establish a pathway for binding referenda and constitutional amendments in Wisconsin, which will be included in his 2025-27 biennial budget:

“Wisconsin Farmers Union strongly supports Governor Evers’ proposal to create a pathway for
Wisconsinites to enact binding referenda and constitutional amendments through direct ballot
initiatives. As an organization rooted in pro-democracy values, we believe the people should have
the ability to shape policies that reflect their collective priorities, especially when the Legislature
fails to act. From expanding healthcare access and creating fair electoral maps to properly
funding our public schools, Wisconsinites have voiced overwhelming support for changes that
have been repeatedly blocked by partisan gridlock. Allowing citizens to vote directly on these
measures ensures that the law reflects the will of the people, not the agenda of a few powerful
politicians.

Democracy works best when power is distributed equitably, and this proposal would give
Wisconsin residents the same opportunity available in more than 20 other states. By empowering
citizens to have a greater voice in their government, we can strengthen accountability and restore
trust in the political process.”
