OutWiGo: Rediscovering Wisconsin’s State Parks

By Charitee Seebecker Aug 16, 2023 | 12:16 PM

Wisconsin is well-known for its vast natural resources and scenic beauty. The state is home to many state parks, state forests, as well as natural areas that offer a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities. These include as hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and much more.

The OutWiGo initiative is designed to encourage people to get out and enjoy all that Wisconsin has to offer. The program aims to increase awareness about the state’s natural resources. It encourages people to explore new areas and try new activities. The initiative is a combination of education, special events, and also programs designed to engage people of all ages.

“The state parks and natural areas are significant resources that benefit both rural and urban communities,” says Chris Pedretti, Section Supervisor with Wisconsin State Parks. “They provide an outlet for people to get out and enjoy nature, learn about the environment, and engage in outdoor activities.”

The state parks and natural areas offer different geographical and natural features, which make them unique and attractive to visitors.

The OutWiGo initiative has been a success since its launch a few years ago. The program has created a new buzz for people to get out and try new things. It has helped people pick up new hobbies, and fall in love with the outdoors again. The state parks have seen a significant increase in visitation and camping over the past few years.

Pedretti says,“We have about 20 million visitors to the state parks and forest annually. This trend is expected to continue.”

The pandemic has further increased the interest in state parks, as people looked for ways to get out of their homes. The OutWiGo initiative has continued to grow, and the state is planning several events to promote the program further. In the winter, there will be a snow event that will focus on winter activities such as skiing and snowshoeing. There will be a similar event next summer as well.

“The OutWiGo initiative is an excellent way to experience the beauty of Wisconsin. I encourage everyone to participate in the program,” says Pedretti.
